Black was getting me down so now I'm blue

Hello Everybody,

Thanks for all the well wishes. I am doing better, not quite 100% yet, but am determined to be well very soon so we can get back into practicing -- which is much needed to make the most of our recording session!

I will try to post a little more often... not exactly a resolution, but a good intention... because for you serious posters, it's hard to have to scroll all the way down after a long post. I may some day change locations of the blog as I've seen some that work more like a list of threads and you can more easily navigate per topic.

But first things first. I liked the black page I originally set up, but I was getting tired of it. So, I've chosen a new template. I hope you like it. If not, well, hmm, that may be too bad! I like to mess with html, what little I know of it, and so I customized this template so I could add links, which you can see on the right. I'll be adding more to these and if you have ideas you can email me (see the email link to the right)... ideas, anyone?

For once I'll keep this one short -- thanks again for the good thoughts and great stories and I will say a little tear came to my eye more than once. Y'all are good people.

P.S. Nate just got a real email address and I've sent him the key to get in as an official post-er. So you don't see his name right now on contributors, but it will reappear when he's done this. Now, Vieta, how'd you get in on that list? I guess Ike did it but I'm not sure how that happened as I am the Keymaster. Not to be confused as related to Tickmeister.

  1. Betse, I know Ike has only posted with either Vieta or I pleading and standing over him (ha, ha)– as you can see he is within a few of the comment sections. Thus, I don't think Ike had an opportunity nor means to place "Vieta" in the contributors section. While at home Vieta asked Ike to contribute and he stated he didn't know how to get access, so he just talked in the comments with the rest of us bloggers.

I do know that Vieta is uncomfortable with her name up there...hope you can figure out how to remove it. ----Sweetpea

  2. I'm relieved to hear from Betse... I was beginning to worry. May your health steadily improve until you're better than your best.

It's going to sound odd if you've read some of my earlier posts, but I have this passion for Christmas music. What are the odds The Wilders will ever do a Christmas CD? I know the concept is probably a hard sell since normal people only buy Christmas CDs during maybe 1/6 of the year... but still, me want! Just wondering.

  3. I think maybe Kermit the Frog said that. I'm kidding.

You didn't ask, but my take on home schooling is that I'm all for it... especially if the home-school-instructor knows his or her stuff. I wrote something like that in my end-of-college essay that went in my Jewell employment file or whatever... basically that the best way to teach would be one-on-one.

I didn't catch any Christmas shows, but wish I had. Where do we sign up to help with the production of a Christmas CD? I'll gladly donate my time this summer, and would even consider other more useful donations!

  4. Re: Musical Talent

I sing with the Heartland Men's Chorus. I have a rehearsal tonight or I'd stick around and talk about home schooling some more...

And I don't mean to imply my singing with a chorus automatically means I have musical talent...

  5. I've got some opinions about home schooling, since I sort of was. (Home schooled that is.) My statement would however be rather long and I'm not sure if it is appropriate to use up that much Wilder's blog bandwidth. I can put it on my own blog, but again not sure it is considered appropriate to mention your own blog on somebody else's. Severe social confusion here, maybe from home schooling. I will wait for an actual Wilder to guide me here.

Back on topic, I am going to do my best to make it to Lawrence. I will be the old bald guy wandering around with a confused look carrying either a Gibson mandolin with a sweat pants drawstring for a strap (bought it on ebay. The strap, not the mandolin) or an open back Ramsey banjo. Feel free to introduce yourselves, but try not to startle me lest I lose control of some sort of biological function. Age does that to a person.

  6. There are enough police in the world, we don't need any more laying rules down on something as silly as this blog. I believe in the notion of "self policing". If you don't think what you are doing is appropriate behavior, then stop it. As for rambling topics and blog bandwidth concerns, I say, WHATever. We ain't payin' for it. Ramble away if you want or don't, if you don't want. Sometimes it's entertaining, sometimes it's not. I always tell people who question how we can get 72 comments on a subject as simple as "A Much Needed Update" that if they don't want to read the comments, don't click on them.
That's my private police policy, pardon my profuse prose, please.

    Palaverous point processed. Palliation pocketed.

  8. A couple of people wondered what Winfield land rush was like, I've done it a couple of times so will give a blow by blow to the best of my memory.

The festival starts on a Thursday, so the land rush is the Thursday one week before that. Of course, you've got to get lined up for land rush, so go back another week or 10 days, can't remember which. At that time, you can bring your camper in and get a number and line up for the rush. Those numbers are given out starting at midnight two weeks before the festival. You can come to the fairgrounds with your camper before that but can't park, so I swear this is true, people show up and drive around in a continuous slow circle for several hours before midnight.

At midnight, the rush to get numbers to line up for the rush starts. Folks who want to go to the Walnut grove line up in the pecan grove in order, Pecan grovers line p over on the field in front of the stage. And there they stay for a week or so. (Paying for camping the whole time I might add.)

On land rush day at 7 AM or so, the folks in the Pecan grove are turned loose to drive over to the Walnut grove at whatever speed they fell is safe. There are a lot of big motor homes heading that way, so it is a bit scary. They go careening to their chosen spot, skid to a stop, and people jump out and start setting up lawn chairs and stringing ropes to mark their territory. Some of the more aggressive males then go around and urinate at all four corners, sometimes even on the wheels of any motor home that gets too close. (OK, so I made that last part up.)

Once all the Walnut grovers are out of the Pecan grove, that side is opened up and the process repeated. I've never rushed into the Pecan grove, so don't know if it is as much chaos as the Walnut or not. I would assume so.

So there you have it. If you want your particular spot, you've got to invest about 3 weeks and/or make multiple trips, plus pay about $75 more for extra camping time. For several years, I have camped with a group of bus people, so have tried to be in the middle of the pack for the rush. No more. My plan for this year is to show up late and camp out by the railroad track.

  10. The Tickmeister is always welcome to join us in our spot in the west campground behind the ball fields right next to the levee (but not in the ditch that always fills up with water when it rains. I usually arrive about two hours before our first show on Thursday and take whatever I can get. Next year I will look for an adequate location, skid to a stop, jump out of the SUV and pee on a lawnchair. That will be your spot ok?

  11. No, I'm thinkin' that will be your spot. I'll park a bit over to the side.

  12. The only flowers that I usually plant are pumpkins. I consider a ripe pumpking in the middle of a corn patch to be a whole lot more satisfying than any flower that I can think of. And I'm gonna put some real profound stuff on my blog as soon as my mind clears up a bit so I can write it down. Damn 60's flashbacks have been bad this week.

I'm sure that land rush in the Pecan grove is a bit different. The pecan campers are usually up drinking all night before the rush, and most of them really don't give a damn if the run into somebody elses rig and knock a few pieces off. When 42 foot motor homes collide, lawyers get involved real quick. And a 42 footer taking a corner on two wheels is a sight to see.

  13. I'll try to record it. I haven't been able to post for a few days, as my life got busy. The problem with being single and having married-with-children friends is you often get asked to babysit. So it goes.

Anyway, thanks for positive words, Vieta, and I hope everyone is doing well. I have bowling tonight, so I should get going.

But not before I say I got my secret gift for appearing to have morals! It's GRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!

  14. For starters: congrats, kudos, and best wishes to Brother Phil.

For enders: Who said it was a DVD? It SO wasn't, and I'm serious. But it is still GRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!

  15. My gift/"hush money"/reward was wearable and meant to cover the torso. And shoulders. And upper arms. Now I have to go to Merriam-Webster online to find out just what exactly the "torso" is.

Anyway, I'm hoping we're not letting thie Christmas CD thing go by the wayside. I'm serious.

    Everybody have a great weekend!

  16. Please, everybody just wait until I get them back from the manufacturer. I only sent Timmer a burned copy because he had ALREADY sent me $20 in the mail and I couldn't stop him. Now I have learned that his copy is lost in the mail and I'm going to have to go back to the job I just quit, reload the video and try to burn another copy so that our poor uber fan can finally get to see it. So, please don't send me money! It's too confusing. We will (hopefully) have them soon enough so if you come to the Cain's Ballroom show, or KBA in Wichita, you can buy it and take a copy home with you. The DVD will be posted for purchase on our website as soon as it is available. Then you can pay instantly with a credit card or download the order form and send me a check ok? It will be here before you know it.
