Happy New Year! The Brown Clown is rolling west on I-70 about 75 miles from St. Louis. We just inaugurated 2008 by dipping our touring toes into the frigid pool of the central plains. It was a quick trip, with stops in Louisville, Kentucky, then Lafayette and Danville, Indiana. Nothing notable to report. You've heard the story before: good crowds, good music, good times, blah, blah, blah. But it did feel good to get back out and play for the people after a fairly lengthy holiday break. Our winter schedule is pretty light by design. We burned the candle at both ends for most of 2007, and our middle was running out of wax. So we all agreed that it would be a good idea to snuff out the flame for awhile to recouperate. So once we get back home today, we will be off again until almost the end of February.
Our time off has allowed us to forget about the road for awhile, and focus our efforts on finishing up our new recording. The new full-length album, "Someone's Got to Pay" is scheduled for release on April 15th, 2008. The original tracks were recorded with Dirk Powell in his Louisiana studio in November of 2006. After careful listening, we decided that additional tracking was necessary, and so the entire project was moved up to Kansas City and placed in the capable hands of our old pal, Brendan Moreland. Due to our busy touring schedule, he had to wait until late October before we could begin overdubbing sessions. But ideas had been germinating all year, and it was fun to finally get them recorded. As I excitedly reported last spring, this new recording will be quite a departure from our previous recordings. Glenn Fields, from The Red Stick Ramblers, sat in on drums on many of the original Louisiana sessions. There's also electric guitars, electric piano, organ and electric bass along with button accordian, cello, viola, cajun triangle, lap steel and tambourines. Our old formula of recording as close to our live sound as possible, was thrown out the window in favor of a completely new approach.
Why the change? Honestly, we needed to be more creative this time. For one thing, all of the songs and tunes on album are original except one old fiddle tune from the Skillet Lickers. So there was really no preconcieved way of doing any of them. We were free to play around with our ideas and experiment with sounds until we got what we liked. Secondly, we were getting bored with the four instruments/ "live performance" model. Although this approach has served us well in the past, we always had to make sacrifices in sound quality in order to play all together in the same room. The bass and fiddle had a tendency to bleed into all the other microphones which really limited how much control we had over the final mixes. So this time, we recorded all of the tracks in complete isolation. For example, even though all of the fiddle tunes were played live, none of us were in the same room. Betse sat in the center of Dirk's main recording room while Ike looked on through the glass of a tiny vocal isolation booth. Nate could see Ike through another window , but was not able to see Betse at all. And since Dirk's studio only has these three rooms. I played banjo and mandolin sitting on the couch of his tiny Toyota RV parked outside the studio. It was pretty wierd, but the resulting sound was fabulous.
Finally, we wanted to make a record that people would actually WANT to listen to this time. I'm not saying that our previous recordings aren't good, but for the past 10 years, we’ve made records that attempted to accurately represent us as a live band. Although we’ve been pretty happy with the way they’ve turned out, you can’t really get that “live” experience from audio content only. There is a visual element that is missing. Because of this, I've always felt like our recordings were a pale imitation of the “real thing”. And usually when people purchased our albums, it was because they had just seen us play a live show. Then, when they listened to their new cd at home, I guess they were probably thinking, “man, I just loved seeing them live, this reminds me of that great experience”.
But for this new album, we wanted to make a record that people would want to listen to over and over- a record that would musically stand on it’s own- a record that people might even hear first, then want to come see us play live because they enjoyed the cd so much. So we set out to make each song unique- to add instrumental textures and production that would be impossible to recreate in a concert setting- to use the studio as a palette to make something richer than just four people playing together.
An "album" is actually a pretty hard thing to find in today's downloadable world. In fact, it seems like we've almost drifted back to the time when people bought 45rpm singles. Then, If you liked an artist, you'd pay a couple of bucks for their new single, take it home and put it in the stack next to your turntable. Now, if you like an artist, you pay your 99 cents to iTunes, download a song and slap it on your iPod where it appears in a playlist along with thousands of other songs. How the song relates to other songs on the same album is now meaningless. In fact, most "albums" nowadays are really just a bunch of songs slapped on a cd with no relationship to each other at all. The concept of sequencing a record- putting songs in order to tell a story with the sound is now a lost art. But this is exactly what we did on "Someone's Got to Pay". There is a beginning, a middle and an end. And hopefully, when you start it, you will WANT to keep listening until the last note. Maybe I'm full of crap for thinking we've made something a little bit better, but that's what we were trying to do. I guess you can be the judge on April 15th.
Well, I am looking forward to this CD. I have been following the Wilders around for several years and have had several discussions with Phil about just what he wrote about. It should be a great CD. And Phil, I still think that you should put out a 2 or 3 disc Live CD from your archives and a Christmas CD, just in case you forgot. Seen ya
ReplyDeleteHey dear Wilders!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the detail report.
Good to know, that you don´t forget the look to not burn out.
I think the described way about your musicproduction could be really a very good idea to bring your music to also more people, which never seen you before. The producing and of course before the thinking about, is a very hard work, but the result will be sure a very nice special like the Wilders are. And by all the hard work you all have made an special experience (so nice to know). Your way is not so easy, like the real life, but by this you and your music grow on and on and on …
So I´m very happy about it – also that you all think in so details about the beginning, the middle and the end of the cd. I think it will be great. I wish you all the best therfore and generally.
Peck, peck to you all, Jutta
"Thanks" BroPhil for the update and news of the CD.
ReplyDeleteWe all hope the best for the Wilder's in whatever the future holds for you.
Looking forward to April and originals! (We too would like a Christmas CD.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update Phil
Take care Wilders and Groupers

As a writer myself I enjoy reading what others put down, and I especially enjoy yours, Phil. You do a very good job of it. Reading what you write always makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mr. Rexroad! I only wish I had more inclination to write. I've sort of grown weary of the day-to-day stuff. I've got a list of blog ideas that I look at from time to time. Some of them will undoubtedly be coming soon. Thanks for reading...
ReplyDeleteI'm excited about the new CD, and love the concept of telling a story through the songs!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the blog, Phil.

An early "Happy Valentine's" to all!!
ReplyDeleteBetty, how nice. It seems for me in America a lot of things for to wish “happy …”. I like it so. We have Valentine on 14. February – like in America? However – yeah.
ReplyDeleteToday I would like to write anyway, because in our news the told about the terrible tornados. I hope that you all are well.
Peck, peck for you all.
Thank you for your concern, Jutta. We were not near any of the tornadoes and are very grateful for that.
ReplyDeleteWe have mainly been dealing with snow about every week since December.
Whew, I´m eased, that you were not near any for the tornadoes, Betty. – I hope all the others have the same luck. Take care of you.
ReplyDeleteWe have had only a little little bit snow in this wintertime (nearly every year). I love it, when I can go outside and see the landscape under a white cover (o.k., not too much in order that people will not get problems.). I love all seasons – of course in our region the temperature aren´t so extremely like by yours. In the moment we have 50 F (10 ° C), no snow, blue sky and the sun is shinning.
Hi, all! Happy Valentine's Day week to you, too!
ReplyDeleteJutta, I live in the extreme southwest corner of Missouri, just next to Arkansas, and we've gotten very strange weather so far this year--very warm one day, then very cold and snowing the next day. On Tuesday we had flash flooding! I blame "global warming."
The tornadoes in Arkansas were miles away from us, thank goodness.
Hope all the rest of you fans and Wilders are safe and cozy. Spring is just around the corner!
--Peggy
Oh Petty, such an extremely weather - very hard! Therefore I´m glad that you just now are looking in enjoy for the spring!
ReplyDeleteHugs to you
A guy once said that the weather, like age, is a state of mind. He was an idiot. I have measured about 30" of snow up this a way, KCI has had about 20" officially. When spring has sprung, I will be most grateful.
ReplyDeleteChuckle, chuckle.
ReplyDeleteOh LVJ, you have a wise to tell us your minds (say facts in a way with humor), that we can´t lose our smile (= it´s a present).
Therefore bisous, bisous for you
Happy Birthday Nate Gawron! 32 years young today...
ReplyDeleteYeah, yeah - Happy Birthday Nate and all the best wishes for you!!! from Jutta with peck, peck
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil for the birthday info.
I can sort of remember being 32. When I turned 33 I told my kids that I had reached the peak of human perfection in that I had lost no physical abilities, but had matured enough to have true wisdom. I raised them to be gullible and they believed it for a while.
ReplyDeleteHappy 32ND Birthday Nate!!!
ReplyDeleteWell for goodness sake will this winter never end. We are to have hard rains and 3-4" of snow tonight and tomorrow!!
I NEED SUN!!
Happy birthday, Nate! Hope it was a good one! Hugs!!!
ReplyDelete--Peggy
Happy Birthday Nate! It only seems like 20 some years ago that I was that young. Betty, I am with you, when in the hello is this gonna end. I have to record "precipitation events" for a couple of projects, and Leavenworth has had over 30" so far this winter. KCI has had about 20". If things don't change pretty quick, there will be a new endangered species, the velcro-arsed, crainally challenged construction manager. My particular sub species has a chair to keyboard interface anomoly which is paradoxal to the amount of work that is cranked out. Happy shoveling!!!
ReplyDeleteBetty, I believe that such weather is very hard. I can´t do anything for you, but I send sun from my heart with my minds to you and hope, that it gives you sometimes a little power to feel better by the hard weather.
ReplyDeletePeck, peck for you
E-Gads I'm back. Weak, wobbly, somewhat confused (that might be my normal though) but on the recovery road and fourth street.
ReplyDeleteWhat has been going on? Tell me everything! We have had snow, Ice, wind, several tornado,s but never lost our power for longer than 20 minutes. Got new roof, we are good to go.
Jutta are you well now?
Hey the Wilders are on the go again, They should really shine as they are rested and fresh. What is it six more weeks till the new CD will be out? Wonder if we can preorder and Kim will mail it to us when she gets them?
I really need a perker-upper.
Now here is a load of peck pecks for everybody, stay safe and stay well.
and here is a quote
"Don't take it too bad. Many of us have short attention spans and get ... - Hey, look at that duck!"
Let me share this accident report with you. LV were you the spotter?????????
ReplyDeleteSince he didn't drown, I laughed.

ReplyDeleteJutta we got the Sun you sent us, but it didn't stay long. We are in for more snow tomorrow and Wed.
Yes I thought thats my kind of guy, he had a plan, my brother and I had a plan once, now this was sixty years ago, plastic wasn't common back then.
ReplyDeleteWe lived by a bridge with pretty deep water under it. Some how we got some plastic and figured if we could tie it over our head and make an air bubble we could dive down and stay underwater.Didn't take us long to figure out we were wrong, that was a bad plan. Wonder we weren't drowned. But we did have a plan. Never did tell our folks.
Jutta keep sending that sunshine, I've forgot what it looks like.
take care everyone and excuse me if I get carried away and talk too much.
"I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings..."
Oh Vieta, I wish, that the weak, wobbly and somewhat confused will go away, so that you will get a better feeling!!! Peck, peck, peck with hugs full of sun from me to you for a better feeling!!! And don´t fly without wings!!! (But in your dreams it´s o.k.) --- of course, sometimes I do the same and now my nose and knee are hurt (an iron rod looked out of the way – in the same colour like the way, so I don´t saw it… to stupid … but I´m lucky, because one of my tooth touch the way --- uff it´s o.k. … so I´ve had luck in bad luck – thanks a lot to my guardian angle!).
ReplyDeleteMy physiotherapist said, o.k. you endure your “flight” well, so you can try your line dance. I was so happy and can´t foreclose began to dance already a little bit in the clinical practice. She said again: TRY it, only TRY it.
I can´t try it. Either I do it or I let it be. So and on last Monday I go to line dance. One dance I could complety dance – it was for Petty (you remember my promise?). It was so great!!!
In the moment, when I dance, I´m out of control about my health, happy to dance, yeah, yeah, yeah. The end of the song was: After the dance, when I was driving home, my body felt very bad. But it was possible to dance!!!
The day after an other physiotherapist said: Hey, you are not twenty years old and your are now not completely o.k.- you need more time – more patience with you – so it´s normal your feeling after the dance.
She said, I will feel good, but I need minimum 6 months (I heard the same 2 months ago) ….. O.k., so I´m coaching me in patience and I´m sure, I will recover completely – I need only time, I´m not so old like you maybe think in this moment – I was born in the summer of love. Tomorrow I will no, if they allowed me to going on with dancing. So, enough above my illness – I only wrote this, because today I must laugh a little bit above my own story and I feel much more better.
Vieta, we must really keep pecker up, right. And your quote showed it on a nice way. And I saw your laughing in your lines – what a good feeling.
And your story with the garden hose and the story with your brother --- I like both.
Betty, we have very nice weather here (spring is coming – also the birds from their hibernation region), so I have enough sun to share it with you all. Good to know, that my last sun-sending can stay a little bit by you. Now I send you all a big big packet. Give me a message, when it´s empty.
And Vieta, if you ever forgot what it looks like, than please think on me, because in my minds I send you ever a sunny smile.
I could write more. For example about the red vinyl. Smile, I know, I´m not so fast, but I have it. The Vinyl it´s so great. When I have more time, maybe I write about it. Thank you my dear Wilders for such a wow music!!
Now it´s late, time to go sleep, because the alarm-clock will ring too early in the morning.
Have a good one!!!
Wow what a great post, Jutta.
ReplyDeleteNasty ol' clouds are back today, but as you say "Spring" is a comin'.
Glad you are feeling better and dancing.
Vieta, about wings: Someone said everybody of us has one wing, but when we hug us or dance together, so we have two wings and can fly …….. our heart fly. I love this thinking so much!
ReplyDeleteHey Betty, about the dancing: Yesterday my physiotherapist and I came agreed, that I must wait to going on with line-dance, because after dancing the body said “oh, oh”(although during it I felt good). But the good side from the story, we saw who far I am and that I need one more help. We have had a good idea (I will like it) and we will do it. And maybe in 2 or 3 months I will try it again with dancing. Everything at the proper time.
In the moment my heart and soul feel very well. So perhaps I can give you a goofy idea against nasty old clouds. That, what I will tell you now – I did it the last week and I feel good! --- O.k., what´s going on: Imagine, I have light brown hair. I was at the hairdresser's. Now I have glaring red highlights and some blond highlights. The red ones are striking, but in a very nice red ..... whew, whew..... crazy, but anyhow they blend into my natural surrounding. So every morning when I go in the bathroom and look in the mirrow and see my hair I have more sunny feelings. And the people around me ..... interesting for me. People, who are open in their minds and easy were happy, when they see me. The other people said nothing, but I noticed that through the colour I bring them more sun. ---- Only less people said: Is it carnival? And I answered: Yes, of course, the whole year. ..... so every day a good feeling.
O.k., Betty I don´t know if you like red ... what´s about with green? ..... However, I hope with this story I brought a little smile and helps against the bad feeling by this stupid clouds.
By us the animals a little bit crazy – they feel the springcoming and during this they are partly slaphappy and do things about I must laughing. Maybe they have music in their head? If they know the Wilders? I think so, because their are so happy.
Take care of you all, I´m thinking on you and give you a smile.
Today morning I was wondering, because on a way, where only alowed that people go, cars was driving. So something was happen. When I went outside I saw it. The roof from the neighborshouse was complete away – a house with 5 stories. The people form the last floor had left their flats. The police, fire department and the technicality public social aid are still here. All people seem o.k. Other people in our region had not so much luck .... The reason for that incident was a guest, which we had since yesterday evening – her name is Emma. I like this name. But what she did was not nice. In the radio they said, Emma blowed with possibly 160 km/hour over our region - it´s a low-pressure system as the case may be a hurricane – whatever ..... Bye Emma, we see that the sky will look better and the sun will coming back.
ReplyDeleteon my place it´s 3/1/08 11:50 AM
ReplyDeleteVieta and the people around you --- I think on you with all my love, every day!
ReplyDeleteAnd Peggy, so long ago, that I read anything from you – so I send you also special hugs!
News from here: Winter is back, but the animals and plants are not interessting in it, they are happy and grow up. And: Jutta will attend on a workshop with bagpipe in May for maybe two hours.
Hugs to you all!
Kinda slow on the old blog. Phil is getting ready to post a new one. I can tell. Who all be going to Knuckleheads Saturday?
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to come out and try to flatfoot a bit.
ReplyDeleteSweet!
ReplyDeleteA very good time was had by all at Knuckleheads last night. A good mix of new and old. The Wilders along with the All-Stars were too much fun. The Wilders played several songs that I haven't heard them play in a long time. They started out accoustic and ended up electric with drums. Didn't matter, it sounded like the rascals we all love. The Tickmeister flatfooted and sang on of my favorites " The wreck of old 97". There were some very interesting drunks that filled in the breaks. Somebody had a birthday and she came up on stage and blew the candles out. The cake was dropped and it went everywhere. Ike grabbed two gigantic handsful and walked around passing it out to whoever wanted a bite. When he got back to where I was sitting, he was gaging on a candle and he asked me to pull it out of his mouth. Hey, what are friends for? Something like this I suppose. Insanity prevails. Hey V, I would think that you taught your little boy not to eat food off the floor. When they grow up and get a mind of their own, no telling what they will do.
ReplyDeleteLV thanks for sharing the Knucklehead show. Would loved to have been there but.. tonight I will listen to them on Radio KBCS.
ReplyDeleteThere is a "Listen Live" on the right top of the page.

Hi, all!
ReplyDeleteI'm in Indiana with my new one-week-old grandson, Archie, and family. Things are going well, and he's a mellow, happy baby! I have to head back to Missouri in a little less than a week, and it will be sad to leave my little grandsons, Archie and Oscar--we're having a great time!
I'm so glad you're feeling better, Vieta!
Thanks for the Knuckleheads review, LVJ. I need a Wilders "fix" BAD!
Peck, peck to all!
--Peggy
Nice to read all the comments - brings good feelings! And Peggy, all the best wishes for your new grandson!
ReplyDeleteAlso peck, peck for you all with a sunny smile!
Thanks for the Knuckleheads update LVJ.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Peggy!!
Peggy, my little grandson just turned 2 months. Too much fun. The KC Star had an article about the SXSW festival with no mention of the Wilders, but it mention several other KC bands. I am extremely dismayed. Not much new or interesting going on. Hey, V, what was your total snow fall for this last winter? I have measured 35 inches up this a way.
ReplyDelete
